Describe, with examples, two ways in which you as a people professional conform with ethics-related legislation. (3CO03 A.C 1.2)
Complying with legislation related to ethics is one of the guiding principles for any people professional in ensuring fairness and equality within the workplace. There is one UK legislation underpinning ethical and professional practice: the Equality Act 2010, specifically dealing with discrimination at work. There are different ways compliance with this legislation is ensured in practice.
Conforming to the Equality Act 2010 is critical in promoting equality and preventing direct or indirect discrimination within a working environment. Being a people professional, I conform to this law by having in place appropriate anti-discrimination policies for its enforcement within the organisation. For example, developing an equal opportunities policy that ensures treating everybody fairly and no form of discrimination is directed toward them based on their age, gender, or ethnicity, among other protected characteristics. In that way, it contributes to compliance with the law but promotes inclusiveness at work.
Of course, ethical considerations should be included in the recruitment practice to make it in line with the Equality Act. Being a people professional, I put in efforts to ensure that processes involved in recruitment are not only fair but also unbiased. This may include blind recruitment techniques whereby all kinds of personal information, such as name, gender, age, etc. of the person is withdrawn from the application so that unconscious biases do not creep in. One can adopt varied interview panels to minimize the effects of individual prejudices on an applicant and offer equal opportunities to each candidate.
First, aligning with UK legislation, for example, the Equality Act 2010, makes a strong statement about ethical and professional practice for a people professional. By implementing policy actions against discrimination and following ethical recruitment procedures, I help to create an organisational culture that upholds the ideals of equality and fairness. What this does is not only bring me in line with the law but also assist in creating a culture of inclusiveness and diversity within the organisation and among employees.
